Where Is Dance Choreography Created?
The best place to choreograph dance routines is wherever you create your best work! It does not need to be glamorous, in fact it can be far from it.
You may be creating quite a sad and morose piece and may find that you need to be away from glaring lights in order to get yourself into the right mood.
So you may choose a room that gives you an option to dim the lights or even a room with not much natural light at all that will have a darker feel which you may find it easier to get in touch with your feelings in.
This is not to say that is is essential for you to take a stroll in a run down basement in order to get in touch with your senses. Just that it may help some people. You may find it possible to work perfectly well in the same studio or room for every piece you choreograph.
Experienced choreographers all have their own habits and the places they choreograph are usually a part of those habits.
What is worth remembering though is that it is just a place. Just because your favourite place is out of reach should not stop you from choreographing as you're still doing the same thing and going through the same process wherever you choreograph.
In some instances, a performance that is already choreographed may need to be altered at the last moment. For example on performance day one of the dancers may have to pull out with an injury or perhaps the stage is not set out quite as you expect.
In these cases the new alterations to the existing choreography may be taking place at the performance location itself perhaps backstage or in a separate room.
Of course you want to avoid this scenario whenever possible, but it just goes to show that sometimes you need to be prepared to choreograph anywhere!
