When Is Dance Choreography Created?
Very much like the space where dance choreography is created, the time when a piece is created is contingent largely on the moment in time when the choreographer is feeling inspired, or else the time that they have set aside to create new routines.
This can hit at any moment in time, at sunrise, midday or in the still of the night. You may notice a specific time period in the day when you tend to work best after a period of choreographing.
A typical example is that a choreographer will come across or rediscover some music that they like. As they listen to the music and all its elements they may start envisioning dancers dancing to it.
From here they can develop more concrete ideas and moves that dancers can perform, and then just continue following this train of thought all the way through to the creation of a new routine or routines.
It can also just as easily happen when the choreographer is just dancing to some music, and then finding that some particularly good ideas emerge when they listen to a certain song. Again they can continue exploring further until they end up with a routine(s).
It is not unusual either for the urge to choreograph to come out at unusual times, for example when you are lying in bed at night or when you are in the shower. At these times you need to be disciplined enough to get out of bed or dry yourself quickly so that you can continue choreographing properly!
Having said that it is possible to choreograph in the shower, though you will probably be marking the moves lightly unless you want to be walking out of a shattered shower enclosure!
Take pleasure in choreographing whenever the needs arises. It is a lot easier to choreograph when you are inspired so make the most of this time whenever it is for you.
Other choreographers may take a more routine approach. They may meet up with their dancers on a certain day of the week and may decide to come up with the routine 1 week before, or 2 days before or 1 day before teaching it to their dancers!
It helps a lot of people to just get up, stand up, put on the music and get inspired as they get involved in it rather than wait for inspiration. You can find that the ideas come as you become consumed in the activity.
